Abstract

Algorithmic management (AM) has become a defining feature of digitally transformed workplaces, particularly in gig economy platforms and knowledge-intensive sectors. This article explores the complex effects of AM on employee motivation and autonomy, integrating qualitative and quantitative findings from recent empirical studies. While algorithmic systems can enhance efficiency and gamify work to boost motivation, they often impose constraints that reduce perceived autonomy and creativity. The dual nature of AM's influence calls for nuanced management strategies that balance algorithmic control with human agency to optimize employee well-being and performance.
