CONCEPTS OF FREEDOM IN THE NEWSPAPER “TARAQQIY”

Abstract

At the beginning of the 20th century, alongside reforms in various spheres of public life, the Turkestan Jadids laid the foundation of the national Uzbek press. The first periodical published in the Uzbek language was titled Taraqqiy, and already in its debut issue, ideas of national independence were articulated. The Jadids expressed concern that without a striving toward intellectual and cultural awakening through science, enlightenment, and the arts, the people would be unable to attain genuine sovereignty.
