THE ROLE OF HUMOR IN SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
Abstract
This article examines the role of humor in second language acquisition (SLA), highlighting its impact on learner motivation, memory retention, pragmatic competence, and classroom community building. Drawing on research and classroom experience, the article argues that humor is not merely an entertaining addition but a powerful pedagogical tool that supports communicative competence and lowers affective barriers to learning. Practical considerations for integrating humor effectively are discussed, including cultural sensitivity and learner comprehension. The article offers insights useful for language teachers who seek to foster an engaging, supportive, and memorable learning environment.
