THE GENRE NATURE OF JOHN STEINBECK’S SHORT FICTION: THE CHRYSANTHEMUMS AND THE WHITE QUAIL
Abstract
John Steinbeck’s oeuvre which even currently attracting scholars’ attention in the field of literary studies is widely considered to be one of the crucial in investigating human nature and its horizons. Especially short stories The Chrysanthemums and The White Quail have been studied in some scholarly works but there are not so many though. This article aims to investigate the genre peculiarities of John Steinbeck’s short fiction according to these stories to understand better the poetics of XX-century American short fiction and the author’s special skill in creating characters in his short prose works. Theories of short fiction are examined on the examples of The Chrysanthemums and The White Quail by supporting our ideas with examples from the works.
