THE FUNCTION OF REFERENCES AS COHESIVE DEVICES IN ENGLISH LITERARY DISCOURSE
Abstract
This thesis investigates the function of references as cohesive devices in English literary discourse, with particular attention to O. Henry’s short story “The Green Door.” The study aims to reveal how reference, both personal, demonstrative, and comparative, contributes to the semantic and structural unity of the text, guiding readers in understanding character relations, narrative progression, and thematic coherence. Drawing on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory of cohesion in English, the research identifies and classifies different types of reference used in the story and analyzes their contextual roles within the narrative.
