METACOMMUNICATIVE TRANSLATION IN THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF POETIC TRANSLATION
Abstract
The article explores the metacommunicative translation activities of the renowned Russian translator S.N. Ivanov, who specialized in translations from Turkic languages, including Old Uzbek. Ivanov's extensive creative legacy, which includes translations of classical Uzbek works, has made a significant contribution to the treasury of Russian Oriental studies. The author examines Ivanov's metatexts, which contain analytical reflections on the translation process and reveal the translator's attitude toward his professional activities. These metatexts include critical analyses of both foreign and his own translations, based on Ivanov's personal translation experience, as well as critical introductory articles, afterwords, annotations, and commentaries to collections of works by Alisher Navoi published in Russian. The article discusses Ivanov's theoretical perspectives on poetic translation from Turkic languages, which the author considers a fundamentally new phenomenon in the art of translation. The author concludes that Ivanov's metatranslational activities can be generalized and articulated in the form of theoretical propositions applicable to translation practice and suggests introducing new principles into the algorithm of poetic translation based on specific recommendations and Ivanov's own translation experience.
