SCHOLARS RESEARCH ON THE CLASSIFICATION OF PERIPHRASIS
Abstract
In modern linguistics, periphrasis is regarded as a complex and multifaceted stylistic device. Its primary function is to describe the characteristics and qualities of an object or concept indirectly through roundabout expressions. This study examines various classifications of periphrasis according to criteria developed by linguistic scholars, including L.V. Grehneva, I.R. Galperin, T.V. Lyskova, N.M. Gonzina, Yu. E. Myazina, and V.P. Moskvin. These classifications span thematic typologies, denotative-semantic correlations, figurative and logical types, and nominative adequacies, among others. Periphrasis expressions are analyzed in terms of their semantic and stylistic characteristics, often incorporating stylistic devices such as metonymy, metaphor, and synecdoche. The research highlights periphrasis as an expressive and flexible linguistic tool, valuable for both literary and everyday language, and proposes further exploration into its applications across cultures and languages.
