THE ROLE OF PAST SIMPLE TENSE AND PAST CONTINOUS TENSE IN TEACHING FOR EFL STUDENTS
Abstract
Teaching past simple and past continuous tenses is essential for EFL students to accurately express past events and enhance their communication skills. The past simple tense is used for completed actions at a specific time, while the past continuous tense describes ongoing actions in the past or interrupted events. EFL learners often struggle with irregular verbs, differentiating between these tenses, and applying correct sentence structures. Effective teaching strategies, such as storytelling, timeline activities, and contrasting exercises, help students grasp these concepts. Mastering past tenses enables learners to improve fluency, comprehension, and overall proficiency in English.
