CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES TO VOCABULARY INSTRUCTION AND ACQUISITION IN ESL CLASSROOMS
Abstract
Vocabulary acquisition is a cornerstone of English as a Second Language (ESL) education, playing a pivotal role in developing the four core language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This paper explores contemporary methods and strategies for effective vocabulary instruction in ESL classrooms. By analyzing recent research on intentional and incidental vocabulary learning, technological integration, and interactive practices, this study highlights innovative approaches that enhance learners' vocabulary retention and application. The findings suggest that combining direct instruction with engaging activities such as games, technology-assisted tools, and real-life scenarios significantly improves vocabulary acquisition outcomes.
